In order to clarify the new Coronavirus’ (COVID-19) impact on the economy and society in general, SIBS resumes the analysis on the evolution of consumption data in Portugal in 2020 compared to 2019.

The most recent data reveal that, for the entire month of December 2020 and during Christmas season, the Portuguese consumers spent an average of 39,4 euros per purchase in MULTIBANCO Network, which represents an increase of about 5,6% compared to the previous month. On the other hand, there were changes in consumption by product category, where the sectors with the greatest variation in the number of purchases in December 2020, compared to the rest of the year (January-November 2020), were: Games, Toys & Childcare (this sector grew x2,5), Cosmetics & Perfumes (x2,1) and Decor & Home Equipment (x2,0).

The peak of operations carried out in MULTIBANCO Network, in Christmas, was on the 24th of December, at 11:30 am., with 312 transactions per second; the 23rd of December was the day with the highest number of physical purchases of the entire 2020, with + 57% compared to the daily average of December 2020.
