After a long period of time marked by several measures and restrictions to fight the pandemic, overall consumption in Portugal increased in the summer season by 12% compared to 2020 and 3% compared to 2019. The value of Portuguese card transactions increased compared to the two previous years, being the drivers of this recovery in the summer. On the other hand, foreign card operations presented a growth of 47% compared to last year’s summer but are still 18% below the summer of 2019.

The Portuguese traveled more to foreign countries than last year’s summer, but less than in 2019. In addition, it is notable the growth in the value of operations in various regions of the country, even compared to the summer of 2019, showing the preference for national destinations. Compared to the summer of 2020, the most significant growths happened in the regions of Madeira (+26%), Azores (+19%), and Algarve (+18%). Compared to the year 2019, the growths in the municipalities of Porto Santo (+26%), Santa Maria da Feira (+14%), Angra do Heroísmo (+13%) and Guimarães (+10%) stand out.
