The number of transactions grows by 15% in Leisure and 11% in the Restaurant sector. Transactions made with foreign cards in Portugal increase by 11% compared to 2024.

SIBS Analytics presents activity indicators recorded on the MULTIBANCO Network, as well as purchases and physical withdrawals made by Portuguese citizens abroad during the summer period, in an infographic format.

Based on data from SIBS Analytics, consumption in Portugal between July and August 2025 grew by 9% in the number of transactions and 4% in value (withdrawals and purchases) compared to the same period last year. The average amount per transaction was €38, €2 less than the 2024 average.

During this period, one in every six transactions was made with foreign cards. The data reveals that the sectors with the highest growth compared to the same period last year were Leisure, which grew 15% in the number of transactions and 1% in value, and Restaurants, which saw an increase of 11% in the number of transactions and 12% in value.

Consumption through foreign cards in Portugal increased by 11% in the number of transactions and 4% in value compared to 2024. The average value per transaction with foreign cards was €41, a decrease of €3 compared to the same period last year. The top 5 foreign countries with the highest consumption in Portugal were France (20%), the United Kingdom (14%), Spain (12%), the United States (7%), and Germany (7%).

As for the Portuguese on holiday in Portugal and abroad, there was a 9% increase in the number of transactions and a 7% increase in consumption value compared to the same period last year, with an average transaction value of €39 (down €1 from last year).

The districts of Faro and Lisbon were the preferred holiday destinations for the Portuguese, each accounting for 12% of the total transactions made with national cards over 50 km from the place of origin. However, Faro saw a 7% decrease in share compared to the same period last year, while Lisbon experienced a 1% growth.

In addition to Faro and Lisbon, the data from SIBS Analytics also shows that the Portuguese are starting to choose other destinations for their summer holidays. Spain, in third place, is the destination with the largest variation in the number of transactions (4%). Porto showed a 7% increase, 3% more than last year.

Regarding the share of transactions in the total consumption by the Portuguese abroad, in terms of number, it was concentrated in Spain (43%), France (16%), Italy (7%), Ireland (5%), and Belgium (4%).
