In order to clarify the new Coronavirus’ (COVID-19) impact on the economy and society in general, SIBS is publishing an analysis on the evolution of consumption data in Portugal over the past few weeks.

The attached infographic illustrates data from the 1st to the 7th of June – the start of the 3rd reopening phase in Portugal. The number of in-store purchases through the MULTIBANCO Network continue to recover, with a 6% increase compared to the previous week, approaching the values registered before the first case in Portugal. Between the 1st and the 7th of June, the daily average of physical purchases through the MULTIBANCO Network was equivalent to 87% of the pre-pandemic average, the highest value since the state of emergency was officially pronounced in Portugal.

Additionally, the number of online purchases reached the highest value since the first week of March, shortly after the confirmation of the first case of the new coronavirus in Portugal. The 7% increase over the previous week led the daily average of online purchases to exceed pre-pandemic values, being three points above the average of online purchases in January and February.
